Subscriber Account active since. Others came to the annual convention to fulfill a different fantasy: meeting the geek of their dreams. A costumed Jedi Master standing at the front echoed into the mic, “Three, two, one, aaaand switch. John Kelleher, a year-old from the Bronx, was there on a whim.
I try not to roll my eyes at the guy sitting across from me, dressed in normal clothes amongst a sea of superheroes. The occasion? Comic Con seems an unlikely place to get your flirt on, but when nerds unite clad in Spandex and armor, sparks can fly. One year, a woman went through nine rounds of three-minute dates with 70 guys without getting a single match…and on her tenth try, she got more than 60 numbers.
Like I said, epic. I had a great time meeting fellow dorks in Minnesota, so I cleared my schedule to give it a shot in the Big Apple. The day before, organizers told me there was a thousands-long waiting list already, but that I should just register and show up anyway, since most of the people on the list were guys.
I find a lengthy queue already forming outside the door. Mostly men. Slightly bedraggled and rain-soaked, I take my place in line and pull out a book, hoping Pikachu and a swipe of red lipstick will be enough to get me into this session. When I was a teenager, I attempted to learn Elvish — mostly because I liked Tolkien, and partly due to my still-standing crush on Orlando Bloom.

A nervous-looking group of women begin to fill the room and take their seats at one of the grey chairs. Each spot is set with a pink card that’s borderline uncomfortably close to the blue-card chairs. As more and more chairs are taken, a woman off to the side awkwardly scans the rows for an open space. The man running the program quickly noticed. At Comic Con , speed dating might seem more or less intimidating than the ordinary session happening at your local bar, depending on how comfortable you feel while sitting across from a man in a cape or a woman dressed as Iron Man.
A man dressed as The Walking Dead’s Daryl Dixon saw the speed-dating session as a way to get himself back out there. Another young man costumed as Luffy from the anime One Piece was hoping the experience would help improve his social skills. In the end, Ursula sitting across from Luigi, Captain America chatting with Ash, the Power Ranger looking at the Queen of Hearts are no different then an unlikely pair participating in any other speed-dating session.
They were just looking for someone to hang out with — and just maybe, someone who would sit with them in an overnight release line. Molly Horan was an editorial intern at Mashable. Coty Beauty – Super Playboy Case Study
Advertised as a free weekend activity for convention attendees over 18, New York Comic Con brought back speed dating for the second time at this geek-filled con. Since I am single, female, and have never speed dated before, I wanted to try this activity out. It was a quick sign-up where I entered my name, email, age, and the time slot when I wanted to speed date.
Afterwards I received a confirmation, and thus it became part of my Comic Con agenda. After spending an entire day at the Javits Convention Center, I went to the room where the speed dating was held. There was a check-in table, where I was assigned a number for privacy purposes, and handed a paper and pen.
I am, after all, a single young man, and despite the fact that exactly one person has sought me out for romantic advice , my attempts at finding love are usually awkward enough even without a camera crew and a guy dressed as Storm Shadow manning the turntables. As for how it turned out, check out the video above, and my thoughts on the event after the jump! The event was was put on by a guy named Ryan who, as he says in the video above, also goes by “Giganakin,” owing to the fact that he’s a big dude who dresses in costume as Anakin Skywalker.
He started running speed dating events at the Star Wars Celebration convention, and they proved to be so popular that he’s doing them at other shows across the country. And they are popular. I barely got in and I had a camera crew and a charming smile backing me up, and there were plenty of people okay, okay, plenty of dudes getting turned away at the door, even with Ryan adding extra sessions. This, I assumed, was to underline the seriousness of the rules that were laid down at the beginning of the session after we’d all sat down: No names and no locations, so that people couldn’t go home, plug ’em into Google and commence stalking.
Once the basic anti-creeper precautions were in place, however, it was time for the fun to start. As with all things, the victory is in the preparation, and I went in with a plan: I’d figure out where I stood by asking what they were into, then shift into romance by asking which favorite character they could see themselves dating or who they identified with romantically , before moving on to more serious topics.
And by “serious topics,” I of course mean Batman.

Professional Day at the Comic Con
Spending three minutes talking about Gundam collectibles is more likely to excite a prospect instead of making their eyes glaze over. And, unlike traditional dating circles that try to encourage women to forgo feminist ideas in order to win true love— never call a man! This is even more poignant considering the comics and their fan worlds are heavily dominated by male artists and creators who seem to think that women are strongest when they forget to wear clothing.
To carve out a space where women set the tone for engagement is nothing less than amazing.

For those of you who don’t know, Comic-Con is described as a fan convention dedicated to comics, anime, graphic novels, video games, movies, etc. The man on the street, however, would describe Comic-Con as a place where socially inept geeks, nerds and weirdos get dressed up, gather in one big convention arena and geek out over their nerdy persuits. Once we were all seated inside and were going on our geeky first dates, I realized something.
I realized something about this weirdo singles convention was different.
